TENS Unit Rental
A TENS machine is a wonderful option for easing labor pains. TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electric Nerve Stimulation. The TENS is a small device that fits easily into the client's palm and it comes with four pads. The pads have electrodes that are then connected by wires to the pulsar. This is especially helpful during your transition to the hospital before any pain management is given and can be especially useful for women who want to give birth without pain medications. The TENS machine is an electronic device that delivers electric currents in the area where you are experiencing pain. They are used for physical therapy for many areas of the body and are often seen in Chiropractic and Physical Therapy offices. The ELLE TENS is specially designed for use in labor and offers a boost button to give additional support during contractions.
How Is It Used for Labor?
With electrode pads placed on the mother's back in four locations, the pregnant woman has control over the frequency and level of the current. The current is delivered through the battery operated pulsar to the electrodes and can range from very mild to more intense pulsing. The feeling that the woman experiences is a pleasant buzzing sensation. Using the Gate Control Theory of Pain, the TENS unit affects how pain signals are transmitted to the brain. The TENS also stimulates the body to produce extra endorphins, the body's natural pain killers. The woman controls the machine and can set it as low or as high as desired or needed
The Benefit of TENS for Labor
While the TENS machine doesn't completely mask the pain, it does help to alleviate it. It allows the laboring woman to feel a sense of control, as she can monitor the pulses herself. This method is completely drug free, allowing the laboring woman a medicine free way to control pain during labor. There are no side effects for the woman or the baby whatsoever. There won't be any problems with monitoring, breastfeeding or with any after-effects for the baby or Mother. While using the TENS machine, the woman maintains her mobility and can work through the contractions in any way that she wants to; he can walk around and change positions.
The Drawback of TENS for Labor
The only drawback to the TENS unity is that it can not be used in water. So the TENS must be removed prior to entering the shower or bath during labor. We find that the TENS is even more effective for the laboring mother after she has removed it for a short time to be in the water during labor.
The TENS machine will not completely erase the pains of labor. It allows the woman to mask some of the pain, and to distract herself, but it won't take away the pain as some of the medical options for pain relief will. Whether you are planning to use pain relief medications or planning a natural birth, the TENS machine will be a great addition to your labor.
